Longines Irish Champions Weekend has established itself as one of the leading international racing festivals and the 2017 renewal is set to achieve new heights. With prize money of more than €4.6 million over the two days, the 10 Group races, featuring 5 Group 1 contests, are a must for some of the world’s best racehorses, trainers and jockeys. The QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown was the joint second highest-rated race in the world and joint highest-rated turf race in the world 2016. The race witnessed Europe’s Champion three-year-old colt Almanzor defeating subsequent Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe heroine Found with Europe’s Champion three-year-old filly Minding back in third place. The race had no fewer than nine Group 1 winners in the field. The following day at the Curragh produced some truly memorable moments with Wicklow Brave coming out on top over Order Of St George in the Palmerstown House Estate Irish St. Leger and Intricately providing trainer Joseph O’Brien and his brother Donnacha with their maiden Group 1 success in the Moyglare Stud Stakes while European Champion Juvenile Churchill was an impressive winner of the Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes.
